State parks back open for big weekend

The chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources state parks bureau says flooding that threatened to spoil the camping at some state parks this weekend has pretty well receded. Kevin Szcodronski says the last of three parks that were closed will be ready for campers — including George Wyth Park in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area that is opening up this morning (Saturday) at 8 o’clock.He says that leaves just part of Ledges State Park closed to car traffic, but he says that’s normal for the low lying area of Ledges. He says half of the horse trails at Brushy Creek that were closed are now back open. Szcodronski (Skuh-drahn-ski) says there shouldn’t be much damage or debris to worry about in the parks themselves. He says the only worry is for people who go out on the water as there will be floating debris in the water, but he says there’s not much in the parks. Szcodronski says the forecast is calling for good weather this weekend and could make finding a campsite difficult. He says he’s heard indications that some of the campgrounds are already full, so he suggests you call ahead before going to any campground. Szcodronski says the Fourth of July holiday is always a popular with campers.
