Over 30 people were killed in bombings in London overnight, and the U.S. Homeland Security Department has raised the alert level to orange — the second highest. But Iowa Congressman Tom Latham says there’s no major concern at this time for Iowa and the rest U.S. He says an e-mail he got from the Capitol Hill police indicated no intelligence that there’s any heightened warning in Iowa, but he says they have raised it on trains and some mass transportation. Latham says it appears now that the bombings are related to the opening of the G-8 economic summit in Scotland. Latham says all the efforts since September 11th have improved the ability of the U.S. to do a better job of stopping any potential attacks. He says there are ongoing plots that have been found out because of what has been happening. Latham serves on the Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee. He says he can’t go into publicly the types of things that have been discovered and stopped, but he says security officials have done an excellent job. Latham says he hopes this raises awareness again that we’re fighting a war against terrorists. “And whether it be in Iraq, whether it be in Afghanistan, whether it be in London today, or here at home tomorrow, these people want to do great harm to us. They want to kill people for effect to create terror and that’s what terror is, ” Latham says. “And we have to do everything possible to stop these people if we’re ever going to preserve what we value here as freedom and liberties. There is no freedom or liberty without security. And we’ve got to understand that and I hope all folks do.” Latham is a Republican representing the fourth district that stretches from central Iowa into north-central and northeast Iowa.LOG 2 FINAL
