The union for most state and local government employees has elected a new leader. Fifty-two-year-old Dan Homan of Sioux City was elected this weekend at the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employee (AFSCME) union convention in the state’s capitol. Homan replaces Jan Corderman who had been president of AFSCME’s Iowa union for a decade. Homan calls AFSCME a fast-growing and politically-strong union, and he promised union members he’d try to ensure workers get their fair share when the economy rebounds. Homan worked in the state’s community based corrections system before becoming a union leader. AFSCME has about 35,000 members in Iowa.
