Iowa’s governor will lead the Democratic Leadership Council, a middle-of-the-road group that helped Bill Clinton win the presidency. Governor Tom Vilsack’s role as upcoming chairman of the group was first revealed last month, but an official announcement was made today. His first act as chairman will come when the D-L-C meets in Ohio June 25th. “I think that Democrats owe this country a positive agenda,” Vilsack says. “It is pretty clear what we’re against. I think it’s now incumbent upon us to establish what we’re for.” Vilsack says the Democratic Leadership Council will develop a “progressive, centrist agenda” that he hopes will be embraced by the rest of his party and rest of the country, too. Vilsack suggests the party’s agenda should change on some issues, such as national security.
