Teachers from across the state are expected to attend a workshop in West Des Moines Thursday and Friday to learn how to teach kids how to handle money. Conference organizer Debra Moore says the goal is to provide educators information they can use in their classroom to make students more financially wise.She says young people today seemed to be in more debt than ever before. She says the country is in greater debt too, and there’s a great need for education. Moore says one educator at the University of Indiana says they loose more students to debt than they do academic failure. Moore is the executive officer of the Iowa Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. She says Iowa students aren’t financial illiterates, but can improve.She says a national survey shows improvement in the scores of Iowa kids. She says Iowa ranks higher than the national average, but she says there’s still room for improvement. This is the fifth year for the workshop and it runs Thursday and Friday.
