A one-million dollar upgrade of Waterloo’s Riverfront Stadium is underway after workers broke ground on phase-one of the project. Crews are adding new public restrooms, an umpires lockeroom and more office space to the stadium which is used by the Waterloo Bucks and the University of Northern Iowa. Bucks general manager Jon Olson says the project is designed to bring more events to the area. He says it’s a huge step that they hope will bring in conference tournaments and maybe NCAA tournaments.Future stages of the five-year project include new home and visitors lockerooms, replacement of the grandstand roof, adding two corporate luxury suites, a reconfiguration of the main concession area and upgrades to the press box and parking lot. Olson expects the stadium to look much different five years from now. Very little work has been done on the stadium since it was built in 1946. The facility housed several minor league baseball teams until 1994.
