The Lansing Kee High baseball team has a semifinal round game in the class 1A state tournament on Thursday but don’t be surprised if the Hawks play a game in the next couple of days. Top ranked Kee High opened the state tournament on Saturday with a 14-5 victory over Walnut and coach Gene Schultz would like to avoid a five-day layoff and was going to search for an opponent, which would be better than having the time off. The rules would apparently allow them to play a game because they did not reach their maximum of 40 during the regular season.Saturday’s action marked the first day of action in Principal Park in Des Moines and despite the scorching heat Schultz says it was a great atmosphere. He says it’s a great way for high school kids to see what it’s like in the big leagues. He says it’s a great facility to hold a tournament. The tournament resumes at noon with the opening round in class 2A.
