A new Iowa law calls on three state agencies to do more to promote Iowa’s 23 National Historic Landmarks. Representative Danny Carroll, a Republican from Grinnell, pushed the legislation. One of the state’s National Historic Landmarks is in Grinnell, Carroll’s hometown. It’s the Merchants’ National Bank, designed by famous architect Louis Sullivan. Carroll says he’d been working with local folks to try to promote the so-called “jewel box” bank and decided the 22 other sites around the state deserved equal treatment. The state departments of economic development, transportation and cultural affairs must come up with a plan to promote the landmarks, which includes the Sergeant Floyd Monument in Sioux City and the Old Capitol in Iowa City. Because of the new law, those agencies must come up with new signs on highways and new or updated Internet websites. “I think we’re too modest, sometimes, in Iowa,” Carroll says. “We have some treasures and we aren’t as aggressive in promoting those as we maybe should be.” There are about 25-hundred historic places in the U-S that have been designated as National Historic Landmarks. Here is a list of the National Historic Landmarks in Iowa: the Amana Colonies, the Blood Run Site in Sioux Falls, the Grenville M. Dodge House in Council Bluffs, the Dubuque County Jail, The Farm House in Ames, The Sergeant Floyd Monument in Sioux City, the Fort Des Moines Provisional Army Officer Trainign School, the George M.
