The search is on in northwest Iowa for the driver of a boat that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident early this (Friday) morning. The D-N-R’s Kevin Baskins says the crash happened about 2 A.M. on West Okoboji Lake near the Village West resort. Baskins says a pleasure craft with six people on board was hit from behind. The other boat went over the top of the first boat. A 51-year-old man from Perry was killed. His wife was taken to a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, hospital. There’s no condition report on her and no names were released. None of the other four passengers were hurt. Baskins describes the vessel that’s subject of the search.Baskins says it’s mostly white with two red racing stripes about 6-to-8 inches wide and a foot apart. It’s thought to be an inboard/outboard about 22-feet long. He would not speculate on what charges the driver of run-away boat might be facing. He says the priority is just to locate the boat. Baskins says the D-N-R is appealing to the public to help in finding it. West Okoboji is a very large lake and he says it’s not known if the boat is still on the water, docked or has been trailered and taken away. The boat that was struck from behind and run over was a 22-foot runabout. It was heavily damaged but did not sink. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Iowa D-N-R at (712) 260-1018 or the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department at (712) 336-2525.
