Waterloo police have arrested a man accused of vandalizing crosses at a local church. 29-year-old Justin Haes of Waterloo was arrested early this (Friday) morning on charges of fifth-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and operating while intoxicated. Police were called to Concordia Lutheran Church around 1 A.M. on a report of a van running over white crosses that were displayed on the church lawn. Officers patrolled the area around the church for nearly two hours before spotting a vehicle that matched the van’s description. Police questioned the driver, who was identified as Haes. Upon further investigation, officers found a piece of one of the damaged knee-high crosses lodged in the van’s undercarriage. Authorities say Haes then admitted to damaging the crosses and they took him to the Black Hawk County jail. Investigation continues.
