The trial for a man accused of causing a fatal prom night accident has been postponed again. A gnarled case involving 23-year-old Damir Mekic forced Judge K-D Briner to reschedule the vehicular homicide trial to October 18th to give the defense more time to prepare. Mekic’s case has been muddied with missed court dates, disappearances, and a defense attorney who had his law license suspended part way through the trial preparation. Mekic who’s a Bosnian citizen, is charged with causing the Waterloo accident that killed Traer teenager Keely Lyons on her prom night April 2003. Mekic missed his original trial date in January 2004 because he fled the country. He was brought back to Iowa earlier this year. The trial was set for July 5th, then pushed back to September when a new defense attorney took over the case. Mekic has pleaded innocent to the charge.
