Governor Tom Vilsack cancelled his trip to New Hampshire Sunday to stay in Iowa to plan for the eventual arrival of as many as 5,000 homeless hurricane victims. Vilsack arranged to speak by phone Sunday afternoon with folks at a Democratic Party picnic in New Hampshire. The governor of New Hampshire introduced Vilsack to the crowd of about 100, then a local party official held up the phone receiver to a microphone and Vilsack spoke for about 20 minutes. During his speech, Vilsack said the federal response to the hurricane was inexcusably slow and the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be fired. The trip was to have been Vilsack’s first step into the first primary state, fueling speculation about his presidential ambitions. This afternoon at three o’clock Vilsack plans to host a community discussion in Newton about the Maytag situation.
