Iowa State coach Dan McCarney says he is not celebrating the Cyclones new national ranking. ISU is 24th in the latest Associated Press poll after Saturday’s 23-3 victory over Iowa. McCarney says the season has just begun, but he says it’ nice to get some recognition. He says teams get ranked and drop out right away, so nobody’s celebrating much about it. Two Cyclones have been rewarded by the Big-12 after Saturday’s win. Defensive back LeMarcus Hicks was named the conference defensive player of the week. Hicks returned an interception for a touchdown as the Cyclones built a 16-0 first half lead. McCarney says Hicks has a “tremendous game” his best since he’s been at Iowa State. Punter Troy Blankenship was named the Big-12 special teams player of the week after averaging over 41 yards on eight punts. McCarney says Blakenship’s 68 yard punt into the wind was one of the biggest plays of the game. The Cyclones are idle until a September 23rd game at Army and McCarney says it is a good time for an off week. McCarney says they got out of the Iowa game without any major injuries and he says the timing is good to allow them to collect their thoughts and refocus on Army.
