A man who was once the top cop of a town in northwest Iowa’s Plymouth County has been released from his cell. The former Merrill police chief is no longer in prison. A judge on Thursday reconsidered the up-to-ten-year prison sentence of 39-year-old Warren Palmer. He was convicted of accepting a bribe from a woman who he stopped for a traffic violation in August of 2003. Palmer’s been in prison for eight months. In reconsidering, the judge said Palmer’s time in prison was more “onerous” than others, due to his prior employment as a law enforcement officer. Palmer was placed on probation for three years.
