Majority of schools see enrollment slip

A majority of Iowa school districts enrolled fewer students this fall compared to last year. An Iowa Department of Education report found about 60 percent of Iowa’s school districts experienced a decline in enrollment this year compared to last. A total of four-hundred-83-thousand-two-hundred-one students were enrolled in Iowa’s public schools this fall. That’s nearly the same as last year’s enrollment — just one-hundred-34 students down from the 2004/2005 school year. Of the three-hundred-65 school districts in Iowa, the fastest growing districts are in the suburbs — Waukee, Ankeny, Johnston, Southeast Polk and Linn-Mar. The districts with the biggest enrollment declines were in central cities –Des Moines, Council Bluffs, Mason City, Sioux City and Davenport.
