A man from the northwest Iowa town of Milford, who was accused of spreading the virus that causes AIDS, is headed to prison. Attorneys for 31-year Dwayne Boyd reached a plea agreement with the prosecution just prior to the pre-trial conference this afternoon.

Boyd was facing four counts of criminal transmission of the H-I-V virus and one count of possession of methamphetamine in Dickinson County. He agreed to plead guilty to one count of criminal transmission of H-I-V and possession of meth. Boyd admitted in court that he engaged in intimate contact with a woman knowing he was H-I-V positive. He also confirmed that he was in possession of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest.

Judge David Lester accepted the plea bargain and sentenced Boyd to the maximum of up to 25-years in prison on the H-I-V charge and one year on the drug charge. He must also register as a sex offender, submit a D-N-A sample for profiling, pay over 93-hundred dollars in restitution to the victims along with other court fees and lodging costs.
