Returning to work from the Christmas holiday proved to be an adventure across the state as commuters were greeted with foggy conditions. Iowa State Patrol spokesman Jim Saunders says there were several reports of fender-benders brought on by the weather. He says a unique combination of the thick fog and icy conditions at intersections and bridges led to accidents.

Saunders says he’s not yet heard of any serious injuries from the accidents.
He says there was a multi-vehicle accident in Warren County along Highway Five. That accident was apparently a 12-car pile-up that closed the highway near Carlisle southeast of Des Moines. Saunders says early reports from the weekend don’t look out of the ordinary.

Saunders says he hasn’t seen all the information yet, but he’s heard of a couple of fatalities this weekend. Saunders says the weather was pretty good and that likely help it to be a safer travel weekend. Saunders says they won’t have all statistics in from the weekend until later this week.
