The second annual Iowa Bicycle Summit gets rolling today (Thursday) in Des Moines. Kathy Ridnour of the Iowa Department of Transportation says it’s the second year for the event. She says the first day they’re having a “bicycle facility” design workshop all day that’s geared toward engineers and planners.

Ridnour says bike facilities are bike trails and they’ll talk specifically about one type of “facility.” She says they’ll talk about bike facilities on the street, not separated bicycle trails. They are incorporated right into the street with regular traffic.

Ridnour says the second day Friday will focus on other types of recreational cycling. She says they’ll talk about how to do trail mapping, and they’ll discuss the Mississippi Rail Trail. They’ll have breakout sessions to talk about getting convention and visitors bureau excited about biking, dirt trail design, they talk about the bike library in Iowa City where you can check out a bike, and how to insure your bike club.
