At the girl’s state tournament in class 1A, Treynor won the rebounding battle and held Fairfield Maharishi standout Sofia Iwobi to just three of 22 shooting as the third ranked Cardinals beat the Pioneers 50-37.

Treynor coach Gail Hartigan says slowing Sofia and blocking out on the boards were the two keys they came in with. Maharishi shot just 24 percent for the game but coach Brendan Higgins said a lack of an inside game was the biggest factor.

The Pioneers were outscored 30-4 in the paint. He says they took some shots early without much confidence and couldn’t work the ball against the big defense inside.
Treynor also had 18 offensive rebounds, and he says when you give them second and third opportunities, their shooters get more confidence in wanting to shoot. Treynor improves to 25-1. Maharishi ends the season 19-6.
