The Class 4A quarterfinals are underway at the girls’ state basketball tournament. Des Moines Roosevelt outscored Lin-Mar of Marion 15-7 in the third quarter and went on to a 57-35 win.

Roosevelt guard Charmaine Bell says they wanted the win after first round losses the past two years. Bell says this is their year as they’ve never been as good as they are now.

Bell says they used the losses as motivation. She says when you work so hard to get to state and then “totally blow it” twice, she says they want to see what it feels like to be on the up side.

Linn-Mar coach Mike Brandt thought his team would be more successful with the press. He says his team reach at times and sent Roosevelt to the free throw line and made the press less effective.

The Lions end an outstanding season with a record of 20-4. Brandt says he’s proud of what the team has done after low expectations at the start of the season.
