The Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa, otherwise known as the Meskwaki will swear in a new chief of police tonight at tribal headquarters in Tama. Roger Sanders, a former Lieutenant and Watch Commander with the Des Moines Police Department, will lead the tribe’s most recent efforts to develop community-oriented policing on the Meskwaki Settlement.

Last year the tribe was awarded 390-thousand dollars to develop the service, through the U.S. Department of Justice. The money will be supplemented with tribal funds to hire five more fulltime officers and buy vehicles and other equipment in the next several weeks.
