A Republican running for Congress unveiled his tax plan Monday. Shell Rock Republican Bill Dix says the best way to spur the economy is to make the president’s tax cuts permanent. Dix says lawmakers in Washington have temporarily increased the child-tax credit, eliminated the “marriage tax” penalty and abolished the federal estate tax and he thinks those all should be made permanent.

Dix says income-tax brackets should be lowered, too, so hard-working Iowa families can keep more of what they earn. Right now the president can only sign or veto budget bills, but First District Congressional candidate Bill Dix says giving the Chief Executive “line-item” veto power would help curb wasteful pork-barrel spending, and he has examples.

He lists the “bridge to nowhere in Alaska,” as well as Iowa’s proposed Rain Forest. “I don’t believe those represent the values of Iowans and their shared priorities,” Dix says. He says giving the president line-item veto authority would be a way to eliminate a lot of that wasteful spending. Here in Iowa, the governor has line-item veto power, and Dix says the president should have the same authority.

Dix is a state representative from Shell Rock who faces Brian Kennedy and Mike Whalen in the Republican primary June 6.
