The Oelwein City Council has given final approval to an ordinance that toughens restrictions on sex offenders. A new state law restricts convicted sex offenders from living within two-thousand feet of a school or day care — but Oelwein’s new law goes beyond that.

Under the ordinance, registered sex offenders may not come within 250 feet of schools, child care facilities, parks, the swimming pool, recreational center, library or bike trail. Exceptions to the rule are biological parents who are transporting their children, or are participating in an event in the restricted area. The Oelwein City Council unanimously approved the final reading of the ordinance Monday.
