Current heat wave is nothing hot historically

So you think Iowa’s been hot lately? State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says if that’s the case, you wouldn’t want to have been around 70 years ago. Hillaker says 1936 was the hottest summer on record in Iowa, and 1934 was pretty close. Hillaker says all the years in the decade of the 1930’s were “pretty darn warm.” Hillaker says the temperatures broke the century mark several times back then, and cites June 30th as an example. He says in 1933 there was a 105 reading at Guthrie Center and 104 at Webster City. In 1931 there was 104 in Clinton 103 in Fayette and Cedar Rapids. Hillaker says the temperatures this summer thus far haven’t come near the highs of 30 years ago.
