The southwest Iowa community of Greenfield is celebrating Independence Day this weekend while also marking the town’s 150th anniversary. Parade coordinator Jennifer Garside says the sesquicentennial events get underway this (Saturday) morning with a parade featuring some 150 entries, including 30 floats and a host of horses, vintage tractors and motorcycles. The lineup for the kiddie parade is at 10 AM with that parade starting at 10:20, followed by the main parade at 10:30 which is being led by a Blackhawk helicopter flown by Greenfield native Captain Chuck Lampee — it’ll be plenty loud and will let everyone know the parade is starting. Other events include: a bike ride, a fun run and movies from the 1950s. Marilyn Overmyer is organizing this weekend’s Greenfield sesquicentennial pageant, which features 150 years of the town’s history. The pageant will be put on by 85 kids, 35 adults and the Greenfield Community Singers will be providing the background music. There will be singing, dancing and humor with the free show that opens at 7:30 tonight (Saturday) at the high school gym. A Greenfield history book has also been created. Phil Cannon, a member of the entertainment committee, says there are several other draws. The Adair County Heritage Museum is open, the Iowa Aviation Museum is open and the Shellsburg Antique Car Museum, which isn’t open on a regular basis, will also be open. There’s also a water carnival on Sunday a fireworks display tonight (Saturday).
