Charles City scored a run in the top of the first and four more in the fourth as the Comets downed fourth-rated Cherokee 6-3 in class 3A.

Eric Miller tossed a five hitter for Charles City and worked out of a ninth inning jam that saw Cherokee put the tying run on base. Comets coach Rick Gabel decided against going to his bullpen in the final inning.

Cherokee had an early 2-1 lead but the Braves hurt their own cause with four errors. Charles City improves to 27-10. Cherokee closes out the season 28-7.

Carroll pitcher Greg Schulz caught a few winks before breaking up his own pitching duel. Moments after play resumed following an hour and ten minute rain delay, Schulz singled to center to drive in the lone run in the bottom of the the seventh in a 1-0 win over Marion in class 3A.

Schulz and Marion pitcher Matt Holland were dominant with each allowing only two hits. Marion closes out the season with a record of 25-12 after making its first trip to state.
