The landmark baseball field beside a cornfield in the northeast Iowa town of Dyersville is hosting its “Ghost Sunday” tomorrow (Sunday).

Alice Schmidt, a spokeswoman for the Field of Dreams, says the event often draws 2,000 onlookers who marvel at seeing the players in their old-fashioned uniforms, like those featured in the film. “They come out of the corn just like they did in the movie and then they have a comedy routine they perform,” she says. The Ghost players take kids out of the crowd to participate in their games and put on a good show for an hour, according to Schmidt, then sign autographs as on-lookers take pictures.

She says the ghost players do play a game, but it’s not traditional baseball. She says the ghost players claim it’s their field so they play by their own rules, playing jokes on the kids and each other, a sort of Harlem Globetrotters but with baseball.

The ball field is hosting a showing of the movie “Field of Dreams” on August 11th on the field itself, which Schmidt predicts will certainly be well-attended. A big screen will be set up in center field, there’s no charge and people can just bring folding chairs or blankets. Actor Kevin Costner is expected to attend the screening and his band will be performing before the movie is shown at dusk.
