Authorities in western Iowa are meeting today (Wednesday) to discuss whether charges will be filed in connection with the drowning Sunday of a Council Bluffs toddler. Council Bluffs police and the Pottawattamie County Attorney are scheduled to discuss the circumstances surrounding the death of 23-month old Jonathan Swigart, sometime today.

The toddler drowned Sunday night in an above ground swimming pool in the back yard of his parents’ home. The boy’s lifeless body was found by his grandmother. Attempts at C-P-R failed and the child was declared dead at a local hospital. Police removed Jonathan’s four-year old brother from the home Monday and placed in protective custody until a judge can conduct a hearing over the matter.

In the meantime, the ultimate decision over whether charges will be filed against the parents rests with Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber. It’s not known how soon that decision will be made.
