Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says he’ll join Senate democratic leaders and other democratic senators today as they try to send a message about stem cell research. President Bush recently vetoed a stem cell research bill that Harkin has pushed.

Harkin says, “We are really upset that the President vetoed the stem cell bill. We want to put everyone on notice that as soon as we come back next year that this will be one of our top priority items. And I intend to lead the charge as I did last time on this. And if there is a new Congress, let’s say with more people who support stem cell research, then we might have a different result next year.” Stem cell research is expected to be a key issue in the November elections.

Harkin says the Presidential veto is “not the last word in this.” Harkin says democrats in the Senate will also continue the push to increase the minimum wage — but Harkin says they reject the plan to tie a minimum wage increase to the repeal of the inheritance tax.
