After winning the 2A state title in 2005 Akron-Westfield added the 1A crown on Friday. The top-rated Westerners held off upset-minded Newell-Fonda 3-1 at the state high school softball tournament in Fort Dodge.

Catcher Shelby Johnson’s RBI single in the top of the first opened the scoring and after Newell-Fonda tied the game in the bottom of the fourth Jophnson’s ground out in the sixth inning brought in the go-ahead run.

North Polk got an unearned run in the fifth and a solo homer from Kay Hagelberg in the sixth as the second-ranked Comets topped number-one Solon 2-0 for the 2A championship.

North Polk’s Sammy Snygg tossed another shutout and was named captain of the all tournament team. She called it a perfect end to the season.

Solon had several chances to score but the Comets kept them off the board. Solon out-hit North Polk six-to-two but the Spartans could not get the key hit to score runs.

Christy Loan tossed a perfect game and Brooke Ruggers bunt in the bottom of the seventh as third-ranked Clear Creek-Amana edged number eight Harlan 1-0 for the 3A title. For the Clippers it is their third state title in five years. It was a sweet finish for Loan whio felt she let the team down a year earlier when they were eliminated in regional play.
