A central Iowa sheriff who is under investigation for allegedly taking money seized from a criminal has requested an investigation of one of his department’s employees. State Department of Criminal Investigation spokesman Jim Saunders says the D-C-I has been called in to investigate complaints against a Dallas County jailer.

Saunders says there have been some allegations of inappropriate contact between the county’s jail administrator and a trustee in the jail, as well as allegations of missing funds from the Dallas County jail.

Saunders says the D-C-I started the investigation at the request of Sheriff Brian Gilbert. Saunders says the investigation is in the preliminary stages and they do know the sheriff has placed jail administrator Deke Gleim on paid administrative leave pending results of the D-C-I investigation.

Saunders says the latest investigation is separate from the investigation of the sheriff. He says there is no connection between the two investigations. Sheriff Gilbert has said he is innocent of the allegations that he took seized money — and Gilbert remains on the job while the investigation against him continues.
