Black Hawk County authorities have determined the cause of an accident involving two large trucks that killed one person and injured two others south of Waterloo Monday afternoon.

Sheriff’s officials have identified the victim as 40-year-old James Luck of Waterloo. Investigators say Luck was the driver of a Black Hawk Waste Management garbage truck that failed to stop at a signed intersection near the county landfill. The garbage truck, which was filled with trash, collided with a dump truck pulling a trailer – owned by Aspro Incorporated of Waterloo.

The dump truck and trailer were filled with about 18-tons of gravel. Officials say 39-year-old Brian Swieter of Waterloo – the dump truck’s driver – and 34-year-old Chad Benham of Denver – a passenger in the garbage truck. Both sustained injuries in the accident.

They were taken to a Waterloo hospital, and later were transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City. The crash closed the busy county intersection for nearly six hours yesterday. The accident remains under investigation.
