One of Iowa’s largest employers is launching a voter education campaign. Published reports indicate Wal-Mart executives have decided to educate the company’s employees about voting in this November’s election. The League of Women Voters has given the nation’s largest retailer its voter education materials.
Earlier this summer, Democrats like Governor Tom Vilsack and other potential presidential candidates appeared at rallies in Iowa to denounce Wal-Mart for failing to provide health care coverage to all its workers. The rallies were organized by a group called “Wake Up Wal-Mart” which Wal-Mart officials charge is trying to get Wal-Mart employees to join a union. About 18-thousand people work at Wal-Marts in Iowa.
Earlier this summer Wal-Mart executives sent those 18-thousand Iowa employees a letter, telling them they “would never suggest…how to vote,” but urging Wal-Mart employees “to talk with (their) friends, (their) family and (their) neighbors about the good Wal-Mart does.”
