The Secretary of State’s website will continue to be updated in days to come as the last final few votes to be counted and confirmed are added to this year’s total. Deputy Secretary Charlie Krogmeier Krogmeier says the number of ballots cast in one key race neared the all-time total for a non-presidential-election year.
As of now, Krogmeier says the total shows one-million-46-thousand votes were cast for governor, coming close to the record million-fifty-thousand cast in 1982. That was the election that swept Republican Terry Branstad into a four-term stay in the governor’s office. “That was Branstad’s first one,” Krogmeier remembers, “Branstad versus Conlin.”
Roxanne Conlin, an attorney and law professor, was defeated in a bid to become Iowa’s first female governor and Republican Branstad went on to hold the office for sixteen years. Krogmeier says there are still some provisional and questioned ballots to be added to the final count, so the final number will go up a little bit.
He’s refreshing the Secretary of State’s website a few times a day and says it will continue to be updated daily till final canvas numbers are in next week. Any spoiled or disputed ballots, or votes cast by people challenged as unqualified to vote, will be reviewed by special precinct boards before they’re added to the final tally.
