One member of Iowa’s congressional delegation says it would be “nuts” to follow the recommendations issued today by the Iraq Study Group. The report concluded conditions in Iraq are “grave,” suggested it’s time to begin pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq, and called on the Bush Administration to start a “diplomatic offensive” to deal with the situation.

Republican Congressman Steve King ridiculed the report, and said it was “nuts” to surrender the field in Iraq and Afghanistan to the terrorists. King also said it was “nuts to let the news media stampede” the country “into a position of pacifism.”

Democrat Senator Tom Harkin called the report an indictment of Bush’s “stay-the-course” strategy in Iraq, and Harkin applauded the call for a “new and enhanced diplomatic effort in the region.”

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley said he thinks President Bush and the Defense Department have a “new attitude” that will bring about a “change of direction” in Iraq.

Congressman Leonard Boswell, a Democrat who serves on the House Intelligence Committee, said it’s now time for Bush himself to come up with a plan of action.
