An Iowa-based magazine for woodworkers is sponsoring an auction of 50 items handcrafted by readers from across the U.S. and Canada, with all proceeds going to charity. Jim Harrold, executive editor of Wood Magazine, says hundreds of woodworking enthusiasts sent in a host of items they built as part of the endeavor, with the very best being selected for the auction.

Harrold says in the September issue, the Des Moines-based magazine asked readers to build wooden gifts in categories like: best jewelry box, best toy or child’s gift, best home accessory and best miniature replica. Since there are easily millions of items for sale on e-Bay, Harrold says the process of finding these wooden masterpieces has been streamlined for admirers and potential buyers.

Harrold says people should go to: “www.woodmagazine.com/auction” to see the 50 items and be linked directly to them on e-Bay. The bidding runs through Saturday. He says one-hundred-percent of the proceeds from the auction will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Harrold says St. Jude works to find cures for catastrophic childhood illnesses and provides treatment for children suffering from such illnesses. Based in Memphis, Tennessee, the hospital is set up so no family ever pays for treatments that aren’t covered by insurance and families without insurance are never asked to pay.

The wooden items for sale include: birdhouses, duck calls, jewelry boxes, turned bowls and a wide selection of toys.
