Campus police at Iowa State University arrested one of their own Tuesday night. Twenty-year-old Austin Meyers, a sophomore from Renwick, is charged in several thefts, including two felonies.

I-S-U Police Captain Gene Deisinger says Meyers allegedly stole two instruments from the locked Music Hall during Thanksgiving break. Deisinger says the guitar was found in an Ames pawn shop while the trumpet was recovered at Meyers’ house.

Deisinger, commander of the Special Operations Unit of the I-S-U police, says “Mr. Meyers was a student security officer for the Department of Public Safety at Iowa State University and under the investigation, it appears that he used some of the access granted through that position to commit some of the thefts.” Deisinger says “It’s certainly a case of concern and has prompted a review of how we hire, how we retain and how we supervise student employees.” He says it would be extremely unfortunate if Meyers abused his position to perpetrate the crimes.

Deisinger says “This is one student out of hundreds we have employed over the years. Nearly all of the others provided exemplary service and thousands of staff hours of security services to the university community, but it is important that we take a look at the program.” Meyers is being held in the Story County Jail on a bond of nearly 20-thousand dollars.
