The experts say 2007 could be the year Iowa’s population finally breaks the three-million mark. New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show as of July first, Iowa had more than two-million 982-thousand residents.

The number of Iowans grew in the past year by more than 16-thousand. If that pace holds, Iowa may indeed make three-million next year, though our population isn’t rising as fast as most other states.

Since 2000, Iowa’s numbers have grown by just under two-percent, while the national average is more than three times that. Currently 30th in population, if Iowa doesn’t see significant growth, it’s expected we’ll lose one of our five congressional seats by 2010.
