Some 16-thousand Iowans will hear those three little words this year — “You have cancer.” As we start 2007, Iowans are encouraged to make lifestyle changes to promote better health. Chuck Reed, spokesman for the Iowa chapter of the American Cancer Society, says if you’re making New Year’s resolutions, make them count. Reed says to successfully quit smoking, make a plan, set a date and get help from friends or experts at the Quit-line — 800-QUIT-NOW. Make an effort to choose restaurants and other environments that are non-smoking. Reed says many people put off going to the doctor until there’s something wrong. He says that mindset needs to change. Reed says make an appointment for your annual physical and get all of your cancer screening tests — for breast, cervical, prostate and colon. Also, make an effort to limit alcohol consumption and to exercise regularly. Reed says there are a host of other suggestions online for making 2007 a healthier year.
