Sales taxes go up a penny in a handful of Iowa communities today. In Mills County in southwest Iowa, a penny of regular local option sales tax will be levied in the towns of Hastings and Silver City, starting today. Businesses in a west central Iowa county have started charging another penny today, too, according to Renee Mulvey, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Revenue. “Starting today, Greene County is adding six jurisdictions to collect the regular local option sales tax — five other towns and the unincorporated area,” Mulvey says. Voters in a majority of Iowa’s 99 counties have passed “regular” local option sales taxes and another one percent sales tax for schools. Sixty-one Iowa counties have a total sales tax rate of seven percent. That?s five cents of state tax, one cent of local option tax, and another penny of the countywide special local option tax for schools. In nine Iowa counties, the tax is six cents on the dollar countywide and elsewhere the rate varies from town to town. Only residents in Johnson and Linn Counties have voted down referendums to impose a countywide one-cent sales tax for schools.
