The Children’s Hospital of Iowa ranks toward the top of a new list of the nation’s best pediatric medical facilities. Child magazine spent nine months analyzing data in some 250 categories on 116 children’s hospitals nationwide. It ranks the Iowa City-based hospital 20th.

Physician-in-charge Michael Artman says the Children’s Hospital of Iowa ranks above those in big cities like Dallas, L.A., Detroit, San Diego, Miami and dozens of others. Dr. Artman says “It’s not just based on popularity or that sort of thing. It’s really based on scoring how your hospital stacks up against the top hospitals in the country. The fact that we rank number-20 really is a testament to all of the folks that work here.”

Artman says about eight-thousand children are admitted every year in Iowa City and 170-thousand are treated statewide through the hospital’s network of clinics and partners.

Artman says “We provide comprehensive care to every child in Iowa. There’s nothing we can’t do here. We don’t have to turn any child away so we’re able to take care of any problem that crops up. I think the breadth and comprehensive nature of our care, the high quality outcomes, really help distinguish us.” The results of the survey will appear in the February 2007 issue of the magazine, which will be on newsstands nationwide January 9th.
