Governor-elect Chet Culver is urging lawmakers to tone down their rhetoric and work across party lines. Culver’s remarks are primarily directed at House Republican Leader Christopher Rants who has predicted Democrats will "plunge the state into deficits."

This (Monday) morning, Culver responded."I encourage all of us to be very careful about what we say and when we say it because it sends a message," Culver said during an appearance on Iowa Public Radio. "What we need to focus on are issues and areas where we can build consensus." According to Culver, voters are tired of political attacks and it’s time to change the "tone" at the statehouse.
