Iowa State guard Mike Taylor has been named the Big-12 Conference rookie of the week. The junior college transfer averaged 21 and a half points for the Cyclones who beat Nebraska and lost in overtime to Kansas. ISU coach Greg McDermott says Taylor continues to make progress.

McDermott says they ask Taylor to do an awful lot for the team. He says Taylor is a natural off guard, but is asked to play some point guard, including when the shot clock is running down and Taylor is asked to create an opportunity for the team.

McDermott says Taylor has needed time to adjust to the point guard spot. He says it’s a process and Taylor is not making as many mistakes as he was at the start of the year. McDermott says there are still some “shot selection issues” that they’re working on . But he says they have to let Taylor go because they’re limited in what they can do on offense. The Cyclones are 2-1 in conference play and return to action Wednesday night at Colorado.
