Icy roads may have played a role in a school bus accident that sent five children to a Waterloo hospital this morning. According to authorities, the children – whose ages range from eight to ten — received minor injuries when the Waterloo Community School District bus they were riding went off a county road on the northern edge of the city around 7:30 this morning.

The bus entered a ditch, but remained upright. Waterloo fire rescue paramedics transported the students to nearby Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment. The five children are all students at the Dr. Walter Cunningham School of Excellence, a Waterloo public elementary facility. The accident is under investigation. Police believe road conditions may have played a role in the mishap.
