A Le Mars man is behind bars, facing attempted murder charges. Police went to a house in northwest Le Mars about two o’clock Saturday morning when someone inside the house called to say they were being threatened by a man with a shotgun.

As police and Plymouth County sheriff’s deputies arrived, three people got out of the home safely. About ten minutes later 59-year-old Roger Van Meveren, the man with the gun, surrendered. Authorities say Van Meveren threatened another person who lived in the home and two guests.

The investigation indicates Van Meveren tried to shoot one of the guests as they fled the home, but the gun did not fire. Van Meveren is charged with attempted murder, going armed with intent, aggravated domestic assault and aggravated assault. He’s being held in the Plymouth County Jail on a 52-thousand dollar bond.
