A new report shows the number of jobs in Iowa’s insurance industry has doubled since 1990. Almost 90-thousand Iowans are working in the state’s insurance industry — earning almost four-billion dollars in wages annually according to the report.

Two-thirds of the people employed in insurance in Iowa are women, and the average salary for a job in the insurance industry is 68 percent higher than other non-farm jobs in Iowa. The Iowa State University study shows that when insurance companies hire new workers, there’s a corresponding increase in new jobs in other businesses, too. More than two-hundred insurance and financial services companies have corporate headquarters in Iowa.

Insurance industry executives credit Iowa’s regulatory and tax environment for the "dynamic growth" here as compared to slow or no-growth other states
