Governor Chet Culver is praising Democrats in the Iowa House who formed a bipartisan panel Monday to search for a long-term fix for the state’s property tax system. However, Culver , who proposed 25-million dollars in property tax relief in late January,  is warning lawmakers not to dally.

"The bottom line is we have tens of thousands of businesses out there that are struggling as we sit here in my office today. They need some instant relief. They are tired of waiting," Culver says. "If the legislature wants to wait, that’s their prerogative. I’m trying to stand up and fight for those small businesses out there that need at least some relief right away."

Five Democrats and four Republicans from the Iowa House will meet on each of the next four Mondays to try to come up with a plan that provides property tax relief to businesses without raising taxes on those who own homes or ag-land in Iowa.
