The classified ad sections of Iowa newspapers and websites are already filled with job openings for teachers. Len Cockman with the Iowa Association of School Boards says the search to fill teaching positions starts earlier each year.

Cockman says as early as December, a lot of school districts know what their budgets and their needs will be for the coming school year. Cockman says schools are starting earlier and earlier to fill teaching positions.

"Over the years that seems to be coming more and more towards the beginning of the year rather than the traditional hiring period of February, March and April." Cockman says most of the jobs being advertised are in urban areas, and the demand seems to continue dropping in rural areas. Still, he says there’s always demand for those who can teach certain language skills and special education.
