Records fell today as the temperatures around much of the state soared into the seventies. Forecaster Rich Kinney at the National Weather Service says the warming that began over the weekend peaked today.

The previous record of 73 for Des Moines, set back in 1933, fell earlier this afternoon when it hit 75. He says after breaking that record, things just kept warming toward the upper 70s.

Kinney says the northern half of the state isn’t likely to reach many records, mainly because the snow cover remains. He says the snow-covered parts of the state are only reaching highs in the fifties and sixties. He says a change is coming anyway.

While Wednesday will be mild with forties north to seventies in the south, closer to the weekend temps will only reach the thirties and forties. At least in southern Iowa, Kinney says there’s little chance for any more snowstorms the rest of the spring.
