A huge fire lit up the morning sky in Waterloo, destroying a housing complex for the elderly that was under construction. Witnesses say the fire began with a loud "bang" around 3:30 this morning.
The fire destroyed "The Rose of Waterloo," a three-story, 64-unit senior assisted living apartment building that was under construction. It took fire crews nearly three hours to extinguish the flames.
Firefighters believe a ruptured gas line may have sparked the blaze, but the official cause hasn’t been determined. Authorities went door-to-door alerting nearby residents of a potential danger, in case the fire spread. About a half-dozen homes were evacuated as a pre-caution. No injuries were reported.
